Neurofeedback is a gentle, painless and non-invasive method of creating a balance within the central nervous system. Neurofeedback helps to restore responsiveness, flexibility, resilience, and harmony to the symphony of our brain. It is the process of training the brain to learn to modify or control cortical activity through auditory and visual feedback.
An out-of-balance brain is like trying to listen to a beautiful symphony orchestra play a lovely piece of music when the trumpets are blasting too loudly and overwhelm the harmonic melody and balance of the other instruments. The symphony of your brain can be drowned out by the blasting “trumpets” of anxiety, stress, pain or trauma and overwhelm the calming and quieting harmony of other brain frequencies, our “violins” of peace and relaxation.
The training process is measured by use of a computer system and sensors on the head. When brain activity shows signs of turbulence (our trumpets blaring), the music within the NeurOptimal® neurofeedback software is momentarily interrupted. This subtle cue alerts your brain on an unconscious level that it is operating inefficiently. The brain learns to “reset” itself and respond more smoothly. It is like holding up a mirror to our brain, so it can see what it is doing and respond accordingly.
Individuals are trained through the use of a software program and neurofeedback system called NeurOptimal® by Zengar Institute, Inc.
Why integrate Counseling with Neurofeedback?
The integration of Neurofeedback and Counseling offers two dynamic and complimentary tools to facilitate emotional wellness, personal growth, and wholeness in individuals. Neurofeedback can help the brain build resilience or an increase in the central nervous systems ability to bounce back from a negative event. Counseling creates a pathway for healing emotional hurts and offers a safe place to navigate the sometimes messy and uncomfortable reactions, patterns, feelings, and experiences in your life. It helps shed light on complex issues, oftentimes lying unseen below conscious understanding (our blind spots), and provides tools to help navigate those sticky places.
The integration of Neurofeedback and Counseling is a holistic perspective that takes into account the brain, heart, body, and spirit.
